Alex Pletcher: From California State Runner-Up to Stanford Cardinal (2026)

Bold headline: California state runner-up Alex Pletcher commits to Stanford for 2027, staying in-state and signaling a rising era for Cardinal swimming.

But here's where it gets controversial... the recruiting numbers and projected impact invite plenty of debate among fans and analysts alike.

California’s own Alex Pletcher, who hails from San Diego and swims for Point Loma High School, has announced his commitment to Stanford University starting in the fall of 2027. The announcement came via Instagram with a caption that captured his excitement: “Go Get ’Em. GO CARD! 🌲🌲.”

Pletcher has long been on the radar as a multi-sport athlete, competing in football in addition to swimming. As a sophomore, he made a strong mark at the CIF State Championships, earning top-four finishes in two individual events: a runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:35.63 and a fourth in the 100-yard free with 44.19. Notably, those marks stood as his best times at that stage, particularly the 200 free, which remained his fastest.

In December, he further progressed at the Speedo Winter Junior Championships in Austin, posting several lifetime bests and reaching multiple finals. His best finish came in the 200 free, where he placed fourth in 1:35.73. He also achieved a career-best 43.70 in a swim-off for the 100 free and finished eighth overall in 44.10. Additional lifetime bests included 50 free in 20.15, 100 butterfly in 48.56, and 200 fly in 1:47.85.

Across his career, Pletcher has earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors twice and is a multi-time NISCA All-American, underscoring his sustained excellence.

Stanford’s incoming class will add Pletcher to a men’s program that finished as runners-up to Cal at the 2025 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships. When comparing Pletcher’s best times to those performances, he would have placed 33rd in the 200 free, tied for 42nd in the 100 free, and 42nd in the 200 fly at that meet.

Crucially, Pletcher is not far from scoring position within the ACC’s top 24, especially given he still has a season and a half before his collegiate debut in Cardinal colors. His versatility is evident—while the 500 free could serve as a back-pocket option, the 100 and 200 free appear poised to be his primary events at Stanford.

Looking ahead, Pletcher still has junior and senior state championships on the horizon, along with numerous summer and winter junior national meets. These events could push his best times even lower and broaden his competitive footprint beyond what we see today.

Pletcher joins a loaded 2027 Stanford recruiting class that already includes Luke Vatev, Soren Carlson, Jacob Bougaieff, Connor Christopherson, Owen Ekk, and Yi Zheng, collectively signaling a strong incoming cohort for the Cardinal.

Controversial note: some observers may question how a mid-education transition will impact his early collegiate performance, given the jump from high school to top-tier NCAA competition. Others will argue this depth in Stanford’s roster could push Pletcher to rapidly elevated national contention. What’s your take: will his blend of sprint and mid-distance freestyles translate into immediate scoring for Stanford, or will he need time to adapt to the higher level of NCAA racing?
