Tottenham Hotspur has set a staggering price for Micky van de Ven, reportedly exceeding £100 million, as confirmed by talkSPORT. This valuation reflects the high demand for the talented defender, who is keen on departing from Spurs in search of a prestigious club within the Premier League or across Europe this summer.
However, Tottenham is not likely to make this transition easy for the Dutch player, especially since he is tied to a contract that runs until 2029.
One of the clubs showing interest in Van de Ven is Liverpool, although they are not anticipated to replicate their extensive spending from the previous summer.
Van de Ven joined Tottenham in 2023 as one of the earliest signings under former manager Ange Postecoglou, having arrived from Wolfsburg. Since then, the 24-year-old has become a crucial part of the team, featuring in 80 matches and even captaining the squad on several occasions this season, underscoring his significance and leadership role within the team.
If any club were to meet Tottenham's asking price of £100 million, Van de Ven would not only make headlines but also secure his position as the most expensive defender in football history. Currently, that record is held by Harry Maguire, who was transferred to Manchester United for £80 million in 2019.
The news about Van de Ven's potential departure comes during a challenging period for him, particularly under the management of Thomas Frank, who took over from Postecoglou. Frustrations became evident after a loss to Chelsea in November when Van de Ven notably refused to shake Frank's hand as he left the pitch. Despite this incident, Frank later revealed that both Van de Ven and teammate Djed Spence, who also skipped the handshake, offered an unsolicited apology the following day.
Tensions between Van de Ven and some Tottenham supporters peaked following a disappointing 3-2 defeat against Bournemouth, leading to a confrontation where a club staff member had to intervene to escort him away, although the defender did voice some strong opinions.
In the wake of the Bournemouth match, Frank empathized with the fans, expressing his disappointment and acknowledging that others would share those feelings. Following that game, Tottenham's league performance has continued to falter, currently placing them 14th in the standings with 27 points after 22 matches. This lackluster performance raises serious concerns about their chances of securing European football for the next season, let alone a spot in the Champions League, which could amplify Van de Ven's desire to seek new opportunities.
Gabby Agbonlahor, a pundit at talkSPORT, has voiced support for Van de Ven's move away from Tottenham, advising him against signing a contract extension. "I believe he deserves a chance to play for a bigger club," Agbonlahor stated in January. "Staying at Spurs doesn’t seem right for him; he deserves better."
If Van de Ven were to leave, where might he end up? Another talkSPORT host, Alan Brazil, suggested that he could fit seamlessly into Manchester City. However, such a transfer seems less probable since City has recently acquired Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, adding him to a center-back roster that already includes Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, and John Stones.
On the other hand, a transfer to Liverpool appears more plausible, especially considering that the club had been in talks for Guehi last summer, only for the deal to fall through at the last moment. With Ibrahima Konate's contract expiring at the end of the current season and uncertainties surrounding his future at Anfield, along with Virgil van Dijk aging at 34, Liverpool could find themselves in need of a defender like Van de Ven.
Nonetheless, any potential move to Liverpool will likely have to wait until next summer due to their significant expenditures of over £200 million on players like Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.
