Imagine feeling robbed of victory despite dominating the game. That's exactly how Tom Cleverley, Plymouth Argyle's head coach, felt after their 1-1 draw against Mansfield Town at Home Park on Tuesday night. But here's where it gets controversial... Was it a fair result, or did external factors play a bigger role than we realize?
Cleverley, serving a one-match touchline ban and watching from the directors' box in the Mayflower Grandstand, couldn't hide his frustration. He saw his team, the Pilgrims, as the clear superior side in the first half. Bim Pepple's sixth goal of the season in the 20th minute gave them the lead, but Mansfield goalkeeper Liam Roberts had other plans, pulling off spectacular saves to keep the score tight. And this is the part most people miss... Despite Argyle's dominance, the game took a turn just before halftime when a cross from Regan Hendry ended up in the net after a bizarre deflection involving Mansfield's Ryan Sweeney and Argyle's Brendan Galloway.
The second half was a different story. Argyle struggled to replicate their first-half performance, and Cleverley was left scratching his head. But what really set him off was the refereeing. Will Finnie's decisions, particularly the mere three minutes of added time at the end, left the Green Army fuming. With five substitutions in the second half, Finnie effectively added only 30 seconds for other stoppages—a decision that Cleverley found inexcusable.
In his post-match comments, Cleverley didn't hold back. "I'm disappointed, the players are disappointed," he said. "We did more than enough to be two or three goals up by halftime. To end 1-1 felt like a kick in the teeth." He emphasized the team's progress, noting that they were disappointed with a draw against a side with five wins in six games. "We just weren't clinical enough," he added, "and it feels like we dropped two points."
Pepple had a golden chance to double Argyle's lead in the first half, but Roberts denied him with another brilliant save. Later, Caleb Watts, playing up front in place of the injured Lorent Tolaj, saw his diving header kept out by Roberts. Cleverley praised his team's first-half performance, saying, "I want us to be front foot, effective, and exciting, and we did all that. But a freakish equalizer knocked the wind out of us, and in the second half, we couldn't create the same clear-cut chances."
Here’s where it gets even more heated... Cleverley couldn't resist drawing a parallel to Mansfield's previous game against Stevenage, where they conceded an equalizer in the sixth minute of added time. Mansfield boss Nigel Clough had made a big deal about that, and Cleverley wondered if it influenced Finnie's decision to add only three minutes this time. "I'm absolutely livid," Cleverley admitted. "I need to be careful what I say, but I will get answers from the referee tonight."
When asked about Finnie's performance and the number of free-kicks awarded against Argyle, Cleverley simply said, "Let's just say I'm livid and leave it at that." But what do you think?
